No Shopping Update #1

As you know, I’ve embarked on my own personal challenge of not shopping for clothes until the Summer (or more specifically August 1st).

For me this is a massive undertaking and although nobody but me is holding me accountable, I have to admit here that I’ve already slipped a couple of times. I don’t mind being transparent, I bought a bag I thought I desperately needed in the BooHoo sale. It was cheap and cheerful – and I hated it so it’s going back.

I then simply had to have a pair of tartan print paper bag trousers because of course I do. Those are staying because they’re super cute.

This morning I bought a £15 puffa jacket to arm myself against the rising chilliness and a sweatshirt I’ve had on my wish list for donkey’s. That was £7. So not exactly breaking the bank and also needed but still, I feel bad I’ve already stumbled at the first hurdle.

I have to remember I’m human and breaking a habit of a lifetime so I will have minor blips. The security team at work asked me if I was okay the other day as there have been no packages since Christmas and I’ll take that as a small win. I might have caved a couple of times but I’ve still mostly avoided the sales and given my debit card most of the month off.

I know I can do this and I’ll be flipping the bird to the people who thought it would be too hard for me come August.

Starting again from NOW.

The Empress’ Old Clothes

Every month I tot up all my expenses to see how much ‘treat’ money I’ll have left after all the bills are covered. These funds go towards dinners out, takeaway and new clothes if I’m lucky.

Increasingly the treat pot is getting smaller, especially after this Christmas and February looks just as bleak as this never ending January.

I beat myself up about never having proper money and although it’s true I like to shop and possibly have a problem with that, I live in Brighton and it’s expensive af! We are all just doing what we can and I know I’m much luckier than a lot so should just shut the fuck up.

But! I’ve decided to set myself the challenge of only wearing clothes I already own until the Summer. I thought this could be fun and teach me a few forgotten lessons about being wasteful. I have some really lovely items in the back of my wardrobe (in a pile of clean laundry in the corner of my room) and dammit if they don’t deserve their moment in the sun (or lack there of).

So this is my pledge. No more new stuff until August. No new handbags, no new clothes. No new jewellery – I have heaps of the stuff.

Man, I might even go through my room with a black bin bag and Kondo some shit. I haven’t actually read or watched any of her stuff but I do like the idea of only housing joy-enhancing stuff. Mmmmmm, stuff.

Shit this is going to be challenging.

UPDATE: There are 197 days until 1st August. I’m going to make a daily note of what I wear each of those days. Who knows, it might even encourage me to get more creative with what I already have.

I’ll hit you back with an update in August. Wish me luck! 🎉

Weekly Digest

This week I am seriously digging:

Atlanta, Season 2

The first season of Atlanta was so good, I feel like I’ve been waiting a life time for it to return. And now Donald Glover and friends (including the amazing Lakeith Stanfield) are back and it’s just as good as ever. Not only is deeply observational, it also has a lot to say about the state of the world, from the point of view of its mainly black cast.

It’s also funny as hell with some of the most off the wall scenarios (particularly episodes 1 (“Alligator Man“) and 6 (“Teddy Perkins“)). One of my favourites so far is episode 5, “Barbershop” which is pure perfection in its simplicity but is written so well and made me cackle all the way through.

Killing Eve

I’m two episodes into this Phoebe Waller-Bridge co-written thriller and I’m frankly OBSESSED. Starring Sandra Oh, Fiona Shaw and always-flawless Jodie Comer as super-assassin Villanelle it’s already been pretty explosive.

Currently playing on BBC America it’s one of my most favourite current shows and I can’t wait to see how Oh’s Eve Polastri fares in her mission to uncover the identity of the woman knocking off several of the world’s most prolific people. What’s more this all feels very female and while we do meet your usual bullshit male bureaucrats, it’s very much the women who shine here.

Jillian, I think you will LOVE.

This Jumpsuit (Above)

Look at this total babe in her orange kimono sleeved jumpsuit.

I can’t imagine myself looking half as good as this in it, however I still want to swan around in this in the warmer months, a straw bag swinging from one arm and my own statement earrings embellishing my ear lobes.

Penguin Modern Collection

There are 50 books in the Penguin Modern collection and are only £1 a pop, so you can grab yourself some classics from the greats without breaking a sweat. So far I’ve got:

Fame by Andy Warhol
New York City in 1979 by Kathy Acker
Food by Gertrude Stein
The End by Samuel Beckett
Investigations of a Dog by Franz Kafka
Three Japanese Short Stories by Akutagawa and Others
The Breakthrough by Daphne Du Maurier
The Missing Girl by Shirley Jackson
and The Custard Heart by Dorothy Parker

Not bad for under a tenner, eh? And they look amazing on the bookshelf or in my case, dotted around the flat.

What are you digging this week?

Definitely May(be) & My June/July Pledge

Artist’s rendition of what Jill and I will look like hanging out

May looks set to be a very packed month round these parts. I’ve already chalked off my first social engagements (which went swimmingly) and can now start looking forward to the arrival of a very special guest indeed.

Clue: it’s not the Queen of England. It’s waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more exciting than that!

I’m thinking you’ll get a lot of social media updates about the penultimate week in May when Jillian and I are finally together so maybe we’ll get creative on that front and wow you with something different. Or maybe we’ll just eat lots, go and see lots, and watch lots. That’s more likely tbh.

I can’t say much other than I’m really starting to get excited about the whole visit. Although, not so excited about the extensive Spring cleaning I will have to do before our home is fit for guests (You’re worth it Jill).

I’d also like to take a moment in this post to lay down my pledge for the next few upcoming months (if it’s in writing I have to do it right?):

From the 1st of June to the 31st July 2016 I, Christa Bass, will not shop

Since that is rather a bold statement, I will elaborate below.

During the month of June and July 2016:

  • I cannot buy: shoes, clothing, accessories or books
  • I may only buy essentials which include: my base make-up items, shampoo/conditioner, moisturiser and nail polish remover*
  • I can buy gifts for other people but only if required/authorised by my credit card holder (which will be Glynn, who I have chosen as he’s closest)
  • I will remove my credit card details from all my most visited shopping sites which is pretty much just ASOS
  • I will use put money I would ordinarily spend onto my credit card and then into our savings account
  • I am allowed to have my hair and nails done because that comes out of the well-being budget (LOL, loopholes!)
  • Instead of spending money during these months, I will read books from my To Read pile, blog and go to the gym at least 3 times a week

Now I don’t think any of you realise what a profound effect this will have on my day-to-day life as I am such a prolific shopper. Like, I have a very real addiction and I want to try to shake it. I shop alllllll the time and have a package delivered to work nearly every day (if not multiple packages).

I send back a lot of things which is great practice but I do get a big kick out of the initial purchase and receiving of items, which makes me think I need to find another outlet. I don’t know what that outlet is but I’m going to try and find out. I’m hoping it will be working out (for the endorphins not weight loss, yo) and blogging more.

So there you are. An exciting month coming up, with two months of sensible behaviour to follow. I think that’s a good balance.

Until then, my friends, it’s business as usual on the blog and in my life. We’ve had some sad news on G’s side of the family which means we’ll be travelling up north in the next week or so but apart from that, same old.

What are you most looking forward to in May/the Summer? ❤

*Includes female products, cotton wool, etc of course but who wants to list every little thing?

The Cat’s Pyjamas – A Loungewear Special

tumblr_nzpqdbLyxF1ucvzzwo1_500

I love being comfortable.

My idea of absolute bliss is coming home, slipping into a fresh pair of pyjamas (preferably something loose and in a jersey material) and lounging. Books, baths and some form of televisual treat will obviously ensue, as would one hopes, something delicious to put in my belly.

I’m not very sexy about the house, in that I’m not a negligee kinda girl but I think my husband is impressed nonetheless. And he better be.

I ordered the best pair of pyjamas last night and NGL, I can’t wait for them to arrive. Unfortunately, my ASOS Premier account has expired and I’m trying to prove to myself that I don’t need it (I totally need it). This just means I still shop as much but I have to wait 3-5 days for my items to be delivered for free. It’s quite thrilling really.

Anywhoo. I thought I’d share what my cosy heart has it’s eye on at the moment. I like doing the odd shopping post because it is a big part of my life. I do like to dress well (ish), even when I’m only sharing my evening with my boyfriend, Netflix.

PicMonkey Collage

Donut Print PJ Set, ASOS Curve £24 – These are my new pyjamas-to-be and I couldn’t be happier about starting our new life together. Will I leave the house again? Probably not.
Valentine’s Heart Sleep Tee, ASOS Curve £18 – Slightly tongue-in-cheek and cute. I recently purchased my first sleep tee* and it’s a joy to bum around in, like the big nighties we had as kids. Plus it’s sooooooo soft I could die.
T-Shirt and Spotted Trouser Pyjama Set, ASOS Curve £24 – This is a cotton set and it looks so fresh. Plus polkadots never tire, and that’s a fact.
Valentine’s Heart Printed Leggings, ASOS £18 – These are totes adorbs and that’s that. Not a full set but these would be lovely under an over-sized tee, plaid shirt or nothing else at all *shocked face*.

All these picks are from ASOS which is standard. I did go on a hunt for cute plus size PJs elsewhere but came up pretty short. The majority were boring, not in my size or weirdly slogan-y. I mean why? I have to say I wish Missguided’s nightwear range extended to their larger customers (maybe it will) and New Look was just depressing. Not all fatties love butterfly print, y’all. Be better.

PicMonkey Collage2

Lounge Jumpsuit in Marl, ASOS Tall £28 – I’m definitely not tall but what I wouldn’t give for this in a short-arse length! Looks so perfect for chilling out maxin’.
Giant Spot Pyjama Set, ASOS Curve £30 – What did I just say about polkadots? And these ones are mahoosive. Nobody would ever lose you round the house in these puppies.
Giant Animal Tee & Jogger Pyjama Set, ASOS Tall £26 – Another from the Tall range but how could I leave these babies behind? So good.
Fleece Onesie with Ears, ASOS Curve £28 – I want this so badly but I know if I ever get it, that’s it for me and the outside world. Forever.

So that’s me and my ultra glamorous wardrobe plans. I will try not to spend the remainder of my wages on lounge pants.

What’s your hanging out routine? Are you pyjama person or do you keep it a little more sassy?

Apologies to the lovely ASOS models whose heads I cut off in the above images.

*I sleep in the nuddy FYI. I just can’t settle if I have to wear clothing 😄😄😄

What I’m Digging: My ASOS Wish List #2

It could be said that I have a real issue with shopping. I shop when I’m sad, I shop when I’m celebrating, bored, frustrated, uninspired. Yes, I know this is not a good thing.

I’m making the effort to change my habits though, because there are other things I need to be doing with my money, such as paying for night classes (gonna be a coder, innit). Sometimes, it’s okay though to break your new rule with a pay-day treat, or a little something you just know it going to make you look like a fucking rock star.

Here are the things I have my eye on this August:

Sweet Treats

PicMonkey Collage

All items via ASOS

Orelia Tusk Hoop Bead Earrings, now £7 (cu-ute, and I do love a hoop)
ASOS Printed Turban, £6 (Because Panda texted me recently to say a turban would totes suit me)
ASOS Curve Leggings in Stripe, now £9 (Could go horribly wrong, could be ace)
New Look Inspire Crochet Panel Vest, £9.99 (Love the subtle detailing on this little vest)

Think About It Splurges

All items via ASOS

Religion Graffiti Shoulder Bag, now £22.50 (Not sure why, but I’m drawn to this slouchy shape and monochrome finish)
ASOS Curve Peg Trouser in Folk Print, £22 (I like the print and the cut of these bad boys)
Diya Plus Size Jumpsuit, now £22 (I am all about jumpsuits at the moment)
ASOS Curve Oversized T-Shirt in Mesh Stripe, £25 (Little bit suggestive but classy, like)

I Wish Wonders

All items via ASOS

Swedish Hasbeens Cross Strap Debutante Mid Heel Sandals, now £66.50 (Pretty sweet deal and they are gorgeous!)
ASOS Curve Washed Casual Jumpsuit With Drawstring, £35 (Another jumpsuit, what of it?)
ASOS Curve Blazer in Crepe with Slim Lapel, £45 (Sharp n’ sexy)
Alice & You Suedette Crop Jacket with Fringing (Sweet and sassy AF)

I look *almost* as perfect as this model

I feel I also have to share with the group that I’ve finally found the Jumpsuit of Destiny.

I’ve waited months for it to come back into stock in my size and now I’ve got it in my possession and it’s incredible! It fits like a glove, cinches in where I want it to, flows where I need it to. I’m in jumpsuit heaven, I tell you!

So, what are you into this Summer?

Things & Inc #2

I love doing these posts and I feel I should do them more often, since there are so many great things to think about, even in low key February while it’s frosty out and there’s not much going on.

As I’ve previously mentioned, I’m in hibernation mode and it’s been a really fun time to reflect on my blog and reading list, to watch some great (and shit) TV and films. Not enough films mind.

So, inspired by my lead up to Christmas edition of Things & Inc, here’s part 2. A few of the things I’ve been thinking about/digging in February.

jessicaharrisonflash1Jessica Harrison

This artist blows me away in general and I have seen a few of her piece pop up over the years, and always been impressed. But I have a very special place in my heart for the Painted Ladies. They are magnificent!

Since it is unlikely I would ever be able to afford one of the original figurines, I have been looking at the photographic prints instead. Still a little bit of a hefty price tag, but maybe one for a birthday wish list.

PLL

Pretty Little Liars

Yet another US TV show that has sucked me in and won’t spit me out until I’ve devoured all five seasons.

PLL is actually pretty good. It’s no Gossip Girl, of course, but nothing is. It’s very twisty and turny; and feels like a continual teen horror movie.

The gist: When pretty (and bitchy) Alison DiLaurentis goes missing, her clique are left to wonder what the eff went on and who would want to harm her. While the girls had been drifting apart before the disappearance, they’re thrown back together by a common enemy, the sinister A; who is threatening to tell all their secrets, and worse.

Honestly, it’s been quite gripping. Thanks as always, Netflix.

NB: I should say here that I’m trying hard to cut down on my television watching during the week. Left to my own devices, I will just sit dribbling in front of the box for four hours straight every night without gaining anything from it. I know it’s no good for me, so I’ve been coming home and reading, blogging and pottering instead. It feels good.

taylor-swift-asos-magazine-january-2015-01ASOS Premier

This is such a material thing to include, but never mind. It’s a total game changer! You know I love ASOS anyway and lust after a lot of items on the site (too much), but upgrading to the Premier account has just been amazing.

Basically: Unlimited next day delivery, courier pick up if you don’t like something; the ASOS magazine to your door and preview emails about upcoming sales, all for just £9.95 a year. £9.95! I know I’m no longer shopping, but when I am… this will change everything.

Girls Season 4

So happy that this show is back again. I love it, even though I dislike at least 75% of the main characters. The writing is fantastic, the characters are flawed and frustrating; and I’m very interested to see where it goes.

Girls-season-4-poster-feature

I like Lena Dunham and will always be into what she brings to the table, even if she doesn’t always present it a way I agree with. I read Not That Kind of Girl and enjoyed it. I might come back to that in a separate post soon.

Other Bloggerstype

Ah, other bloggers. Such a massive part of why I’m enjoying blogging so much right now.

Again, my current favourites will fill their own future post in the next few weeks but this week I have had some great interaction, when I really needed it, and I am starting to feel very excited about my blogging future.

I have some fun things coming up, including a collaboration with a fellow film lover that really peaks my creative interest!

So that’s what I’m about this month! What are you digging?
