I’m quite sure the world is waiting with baited breath to hear what I have to say about this year’s Oscars and who I think should win. So as is traditional, here are my hopes vs. what will probably happen.

(Full list of nominees here).

Best Motion Picture of the Year

The Nominees:

A Star is Born • BlacKkKlansman • Black Panther • Bohemian Rhapsody • Green Book • Roma • The Favourite • Vice

First up I am so stoked for BP for getting into this category. Best Picture! I loved it and it is so dope to have it appear in what is traditionally quite a stuffy category. It’s a damn Marvel movie FFS! So out of principle I would be doing cartwheels if it won. It almost definitely won’t but boy do I get a kick out of the Academy losing their shit about it being in the running at all (I imagine, maybe they’re not).

My Hopes

I think of all the films in this list, The Favourite is my favourite. I also very much enjoyed Green Book but I think it’s such an obvious choice. Either of those would be fine with me.

What Will Probably Happen

I reckon Bohemian Rhapsody will win. It was enjoyable enough but I’d love to see something a little more quirky take this.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role

The Nominees:

Bradley Cooper (A Star is Born) • Christian Bale (Vice) • Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) • Viggo Mortensen (Green Book) • Willem Dafoe (At Eternity’s Gate)

I’ve not seen Vice or At Eternity’s Gate so I can’t comment on either actor for those films.

My Hopes

Viggo was outstanding in Green Book but Rami Malek’s Freddy swings it for me with its sheer dedication to detail. I was dubious about the casting and the film at first but boy did he win me round. Give him the lite golden man.

What Will Probably Happen

Surely Rami’s a no brainer?

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role

The Nominees:

Glenn Close (The Wife) • Lady Gaga (A Star is Born) • Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) • Olivia Colman (The Favourite) • Yalita Aparicio (Roma)

This is probably the tightest category for me because look at those nominees. I haven’t seen Roma yet but it’s on the menu tonight.

My Hopes

Imagine having to pick between Olivia Colman, Melissa and Gaga? Impossible! If I had to though, I pick Olivia because her Queen Anne was sensational. The perfect mixture of grotesque and vulnerable.

What Will Probably Happen

Colman FTW. No doubt.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role

The Nominees:

Adam Driver (BlacKkKlansman) • Mahershala Ali (Green Book) • Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) • Sam Elliott (A Star is Born) • Sam Rockwell (Vice)

Another well saturated category. Lots of white men though!

My Hopes

Mahershala forever, honestly – can he just be in all films from now on? Richard E. was amazing in CYEFM? too so I’d be happy for him to get the statuette too.

It is outrageous that he appears here in the SUPPORTING ACTOR CATEGORY IN A FILM ABOUT DON SHIRLEY, THE VERY CHARACTER, THE MAIN CHARACTER HE PLAYS, isn’t it? I mean, “supporting”? Fuck you Academy.

What Will Probably Happen

My boy, right? Sam Rockwell won last year so he should sit this one out.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role

Amy Adams (Vice) • Emma Stone (The Favourite) • Marina de Tavria (Roma) •
Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) • Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk)

I really hated Beale Street but Regina King WAS the highlight.

My Hopes

Rachel Weisz, boo. What a dame!

What Will Probably Happen

Maybe Regina?

Best Achievement in Directing

Adam McKay (Vice) • Alfonso Cuarón (Roma) • Pawel Pawlikowski (Cold War) • Spike Lee (BlacKkKlansman) • Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite)

I’ve only seen two movies in this category so I don’t have all the information.

My Hopes

Yorgs I think. I’m a fan.

What Will Probably Happen

It could be anyone’s. Alfonso took the Golden Globe which is sometimes a good indication of what could happen.

The Best of the Rest…

Best Original Screenplay

Paul Schrader (First Reformed) • Nick Vallelonga, Brian Hayes Currie, Peter Farrelly (Green Book) • Alfonso Cuarón (Roma) • Deborah Davis, Tony McNamara (The Favourite) • Adam McKay (Vice)

Who knows? I haven’t seen First Reformed but I’ve heard good things so maybe it deserves some recognition here?

Best Adapted Screenplay

Eric Roth, Bradley Cooper, Will Fetters (A Star is Born) • Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz, Kevin Willmott, Spike Lee (BlacKkKlansman) • Nicole Holofcener, Jeff Whitty (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) • Barry Jenkins (If Beale Street Could Talk) • Joel Coen, Ethan Coen (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs)

I really enjoyed The Ballad of Buster Scruggs despite myself, though I loved Can You Ever Forgive Me? A Star Is Born was also lovely – so I don’t really mind what happens in this category.

Best Achievement in Cinematography

Matthew Libatique (A Star is Born) • Lukasz Zal (Cold War) • Caleb Deschanel (Never Look Away) • Alfonso Cuarón (Roma) • Robbie Ryan (The Favourite)

I’m thinking The Fave? You just have to look at it.

Best Animated Feature Film

Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) • Mamoru Hosoda, Yûichirô Saitô (Mirai) • Rich Moore, Phil Johnston, Clark Spencer Ralph Breaks the Internet) • Wes Anderson, Scott Rudin, Steven Rales, Jeremy Dawson (Isle of Dogs) • Brad Bird, John Walker, Nicole Paradis Grindle (Incredibles 2)
I LOVED Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse so it gets my vote. I also liked Isle of Dogs so either of those will please me.

Best Animated Short Film

Alison Snowden, David Fine (Animal Behaviour) • Domee Shi, Becky Neiman (Bao) •
Louise Bagnall, Nuria Gonzalez Blanco (Late Afternoon) • Andrew Chesworth, Bobby Pontillas (One Small Step) • Trevor Jimenez (Weekends)

Bao, Bao, Bao! It’s perfect. Admittedly, I haven’t seen any of the other shorts but I’m still confident.
